LA’s Grand Central Market

The Grand Central Market a downtown community hub for almost one hundred years.  The market opened it’s doors in 1917 and since then has been a gathering center for all walks of life.  Located in the ground floor of the stately Homer Laughlin Building, which once housed an office for American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, forming the centerpiece of L.A.’s Historic Core District.  Today the market is a fantastic place to discover and explore all kinds of sights, smells, and tastes.

Grand Central Market - Downtown Los Angeles

From my point of view this market, although much smaller, is very similar to that of Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia, a vast collection of all walks of life selling their own specialties.  My favorite part is it is so affordable.

At your local grocery store, I bet your paying at least 99 cents per pepper.

3lbs of Green Peppers for $2.

I love having fresh produce on hand to inspire my meal creations, however on a budget it is not as important as one may think.  Yet at places like this where I can walk out with 3 bags full of goodies and only spend $19.  I am thrilled!

Fresh veggies, fruit & of course, cactus.

We walked out of the market today with —

  • 2 apples
  • 1 grapefruit
  • 1 bunch cilantro
  • 5 heads of garlic
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 bag of corn tortillas
  • 2 green peppers
  • 2 red peppers
  • 2 lemons
  • 1/2 lb of red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 lb salt seasoning
  • 1/2 lb cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 lb sea salt

ALL FOR LESS THEN $19!  I don’t know about you but I can’t walk out of the grocery store without spending at least $5 – $6 on one small jar of spices.  Yet we got 2lbs for under $9.  I guess what I am getting at is look into discovering new ways to purchase the essentials in your kitchen.  Check online for a local farmers market, a co-op grocery store, or something special like the Grand Central Market.  Then let me know how much happier your taste buds are and how much heavier your wallet is!
