Pack your beach blanket, a picnic, your favorite drink, tealights, brown paper bags and head down to the Santa Monica Pier. Every Thursday evening from early July to early September the Santa Monica Pier hosts the Twilight Series of live concerts from various musicians. Concerts start at 7, but if you have come for a beach spot get there as early as possible for the ear blasting, party hopping spots right next to the pier. People stake their sand real estate with glow torches, brown paper bag tealights, and even neon glowing swords.
The Thursday night summer crowd is somewhat random and unpredictable– families, teenagers, adults, 20 somethings, proving not only is the music entertaining but so is the crowd. This past Thursday was the kick off to the weekend long Beatlefest, in which tribute band “Abbey Road” played an acoustic set of Beatles tunes followed by the crowd pleaser on this particular Thursday night, Led Zepagain, a Led Zeppelin cover band.
This summer series has included a decent line up with a wide range of genres. Ben Lee, Brother, Jace Everette, Ana Tijoux, Jovanotti, Kailash Kher Kailasa, Ricki Lee Jones, Soulive, Bettye LaVette, Dr. John and Lower 911.
If you live near by and haven’t yet experienced a twilight concert, you are in luck — on September 2nd, Dr. John and the Lower 911 will close off the season. So head down to the pier this Thursday with some delicious picnic delicacies and your favorite bottle of wine to enjoy some New Orleans Mardi Gras style Jazz!
